Distinguished and Famous people from Queanbeyan
🏎️ Mark Webber
Mark Webber remembered childhood in Queanbeyan with engines close at hand: his father ran a petrol station and motorcycle shop. Riding alone in a paddock, he supplied his own race commentary and, conveniently, won every event. Real competition followed through karting and an international motor-racing career. He won nine Formula One Grands Prix and later became a world endurance champion. His recorded recollections preserve the local starting point behind the major circuits and television work. Before there were podium interviews, there was a Queanbeyan boy imagining the race while doing both the riding and the commentary himself.
🏉 David Campese
David Campese recalled the leap from Queanbeyan to playing at the Sydney Cricket Ground when reflecting on his international rugby career. Making his Wallabies debut in 1982, he became a central figure in the 1984 Grand Slam tour and Australia’s first World Cup victory in 1991, when he was named player of the tournament. He finished with 101 Tests before retiring in 1996. His attacking play made him one of the sport’s most recognisable figures. He remembered the SCG appearance as an extraordinary opportunity for a young man from a small town.
📰 John Gale
John Gale founded the Queanbeyan Age, the district’s first newspaper, giving the growing community a continuing printed record and a forum for public argument. He also supported the Queanbeyan-Canberra area as the site for Australia’s future national capital. That advocacy earned him the description “Father of Canberra”, a title also associated with Austin Chapman rather than a claim that one person created the city alone. The printing museum preserves the local trade behind the newspaper. Gale’s connection brings together the practical work of publishing a country paper and a campaign whose eventual consequences transformed the neighbouring district.
🎬 George Lazenby
George Lazenby moved to Queanbeyan at fourteen and attended the local high school before the unexpected career turn that made him James Bond. He starred in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service despite having no previous acting career and then declined to continue with further Bond films. His later recorded interviews describe how he obtained the role and the decisions that followed. Queanbeyan honoured him through its Honour Walk, recognising the schoolboy connection behind an unusually improbable route to cinema fame. The town did not produce Bond himself, of course, but it did educate the Australian who played him.
🏸 Heather McKay
Heather McKay grew up in Queanbeyan in a family of eleven children encouraged to enjoy active lives. She played several sports and took up squash to improve her fitness. The supposed sideline became an extraordinary career: she won sixteen consecutive British Open titles, from 1962 to 1977, when that competition was regarded as the unofficial world championship. World titles followed when formal championships were established. McKay credited fitness, good technique and the ability to control her own game. After her elite playing career she continued competing in Masters events and coaching. Few fitness programmes have produced quite such a formidable result.
